It’s easy to be cynical about Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s adventures as a downshifted smallholder in Escape to River Cottage; after all, given his fame and fortune, he could upshift again faster than a BMW sports gearbox whenever he chose. “Why don’t you give it a go?”, he asks us. Because we don’t all have fat media contracts to fall back on, we roll our eyes and reply. However, despite HF-W’s seeming like a Posy Simmonds character, the fact remains that no TV chef has come close when it com

Devon is one of the most stunning counties in England and with a magnificent coastline and extensive countryside it is easy to see why it is one of the most popular holiday destinations. In particular the South Hams, which is situated in the South of Devon, offers the perfect place for a family holiday or romantic weekend break. The close proximity to the coast means that there is a variety of water-based activities, beautiful beaches and charming coastal towns, and with an abundance of accommodation from luxury hotels, camping and self-catering cottages you will be spoilt for choice.
Coastline & Beaches
The South Devon coast offers the picturesque holiday with an array of water-based activities, sandy shores, rugged cliff tops and quaint coastal villages. Leisure activities range from sailing, canoeing and surfing, and for those seeking something more adventurous why not attempt a day kite surfing. Beaches worth visiting are Bantham which is a popular surfing beach, Blackpool Sands a good family beach and Bigbury Bay which hosts the fabulous Burgh Island which is only accessible at low tide or by sea tractor. For those not wishing to get wet, the scenic South Devon coastal walking trails provide the chance to spot dolphins, seals, basking sharks and marine birds.
‘Must See’ Towns
Dartmouth
Dartmouth is one of the most breathtaking coastal towns and with its narrow lanes, Elizabethan streetscapes, boutique shops, reputation for good food and stunning views overlooking the River Dart it is easy to see why this is considered the ‘jewel of the South Hams’. The natural deep-water harbour has been the driving force behind the town’s history as a port and military centre. Accommodation here is easy to find, whether it’s camping, self-catering coastal cottages or that luxury Devon hotel, there is something for everyone. The Dartmouth Castle, built in 1488 is a must see as it is one of the most picturesquely- sited fortresses in England.
Salcombe
Salcombe is sheltered inside the Kingsbridge Estuary and by making the streets pedestrianised it has retained peace and quiet and traditional time. It was, and still is a nautical town and even has it’s own maritime museum. Here the streets are lined with beautiful boutique shops and galleries.
Kingsbridge
Situated at the head of the estuary, the market town of Kingsbridge is known as the capital of the South Hams. Sometime after the Norman Conquest, Kingsbridge and the lands around it came into the possession of the Buckfast Abbey and in 1219 the abbot was granted the permission to hold a market in the town. His monks sold their produce of honey, fruit and vegetables and there are still weekly markets with farmers’ markets held on the first Saturday of the month.
Family Attractions
The South Hams is ideal for family outings. The many surrounding beaches provide the perfect place to unwind and relax with the kids and a picnic. As mentioned above, Blackpool Sands is a brilliant family sandy sheltered beach in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are lots of rock pools which are great to explore with the little ones. Other family attractions include Pennywell Farm, located at Buckfastleigh and Woodlands Adventure Park in Dartmouth. Travel further afield and head to Plymouth to visit the interactive National Maritime Museum, which is great for older children.
After spending the last few summers in the South Hams we have explored and stayed in some fabulous places – we’ve camped with the kids in Salcombe and spent a number of romantic weekends in our favourite hotel in the beautiful spot of Dartmouth- The Dart Marina

Firstly, Christmas in Devon wouldn’t be the same without a shopping trip to the cathedral city of Exeter. Each and every year the Christmas Gift Markets arrive in Exeter and spread the festive cheer far and wide. Combining the best of everything old and new, you’ll find Christmas gifts of all shapes and sizes to suit every pocket. Avoid the hassle of Christmas traffic and stay over night. There’s always lots of hotel special offers specifically aimed at Christmas shoppers. You can’t visit Exeter at Christmas without a trip to the beautiful Cathedral. If you plan ahead, try to attend one of the many Carol singing events performed by Exeter Cathedral Choir. The choir is really quite breathtaking and it’s definitely guaranteed to get you in the mood for Christmas.
Secondly, if shopping is still on your mind, Westpoint hosts a unique ‘Christmas Shopping Fayre’. With literally hundreds of Christmas stalls all under one roof, food producers, wholesalers and suppliers, there’s also ample free parking. It’s billed as the South West’s biggest festive shopping event – so you won’t be disappointed.
If it’s snow you’re after, you’ll also be able to find it in Devon. Enjoy the snow, which appears every year at the Winter Wonderland event at the Model Village in Babbacombe. Just a stone throw away from the bustling harbour-side of Torquay, you can enjoy a white snow-scape and visit Santa’s grotto at the same time. The ‘Village’ is transformed using highly specialised snow effects, as used in Harry Potter and other blockbuster Hollywood films. Enjoy the thousands of miniature lights as they sparkle and create a magical spectacle.
In Torquay, there’s an open-air synthetic ice rink to have some fun on. Open-air ice rinks are becoming increasingly popular at Christmas time, however they use large amounts of energy and water – which is not environmentally friendly. However, here’s a synthetic rink, which requires no energy to power it and provides a surface that’s easy for beginners to learn on, making it perfect for children. Surrounding the rink, located at Beacon Quay, are Christmas trees festooned and decorated with pretty low-energy fairy lights. With lots of shops, restaurants and the beautiful harbour-side to explore, Torquay is definitely worth an eco-friendly visit at Christmas.
Finally, keep the Christmas sparkle going and head towards Dartmouth. The Candlelit event, which takes place each Christmas, is a magical time for adults and children alike. The event runs throughout Dartmouth over the first weekend of December. You’ll find lashings of festive food, lantern-lit processions, live music, late-night shopping and Santa’s arrival. The amazing willow and paper lantern procession happens on the Friday. The food markets start around 4pm and procession follows on. The boat procession happens on Saturday, with the Christmas market held over both Saturday and Sunday. Dartmouth is the perfect setting for doing some late night shopping too – think candlelit dinners in one of the fabulous restaurants to revive your senses after shopping. Have a festive drink or two and stay overnight? Visit Dartmouth for your festive shopping and expect beautiful surroundings and the opportunity to buy something different from all the independent shops and galleries that you’ll find in the town centre.
I am lucky enough to live and work in Devon. Every year I spend my Christmas in Devon and have enjoyed attending many events and festive celebrations. I have used this knowledge and experience to compile the top 5 things to do.
